Sleep Apnea Treatment

Sleep Apnea Solutions & CPAP Alternatives

What is Sleep Apnea?

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is when the airway collapses because of the tissues in the neck and throat relaxing and the tongue falling back and blocking the airway. When this happens, airflow to the lung is restricted (Hypopnea) or blocked completely (Apnea). When the airflow is limited enough the brain will signal an emergency response, bringing the person out of deep sleep, and into a light level of sleep where the person will gasp or adjust their position to increase airflow, then fall asleep again. And the cycle repeats.

The effects of this are obviously dangerous. The spurts of gasping and arousal into lighter sleep have extremely negative effects on the persons sleep quality. In addition heart attack, heart disease, obesity, diabetes, heat failure, inability to loose weight and strokes have all been strongly linked to sleep apnea. Even depression and ADHD are believe by some to be caused or exacerbated by sleep apnea.

CPAP

The gold standard for Sleep apnea treatment is CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure). CPAP works by forcing the airway open via a mask worn on the face and a hose connecting to a machine. The CPAP machine detects when an apnea is occurring and applies positive air pressure to open the airway. When a patient can tolerate the treatment, it is incredibly effective. The problem is many patients can’t tolerate it.

Oral Appliance Therapy

An oral appliance (sometimes called an orthotic) works simply. An upper and lower tray are custom made by Dr. Wheeler and are fit to perfectly follow the patients teeth for maximum comfort. The two tray connect to each other, some with bands, some with articulating rods, some with interlocking grooves. When connected, the lower jaw is held slightly forward in a comfortable position that does not allow the tongue and other tissues to collapse at night, keeping the airway open, and relieving sleep apnea.

This treatment requires no mask, no hose, no air pressure, no electricity, and nothing bulky. Many of our patient love how easy the appliance is to travel with and use wherever they may be. Since there is no electricity required and the appliance can fit in your pocket, it is an incredibly simple and enviable CPAP alternative.
